Hikaru Yuzuki (SHOMA FUKUI), who works for a television production company in present-day Japan, discovers a mysterious bottle washed ashore on the coast of Omaezaki, Shizuoka.
As he investigates its origin, he learns that the bottle is in fact a cookie tin once supplied to the Imperial Japanese Navy by his relatives during World War II. Inside is a letter written aboard the heavy cruiser Haguro, shortly before she was sunk in the Strait of Malacca off the coast of Malaysia during the final months of the war.
Having survived countless battles, Haguro became known as the "Fortunate Warship." However, as Japan moved closer to defeat, she was assigned the dangerous mission of transporting military supplies. On board, Major Kenzaki, haunted by the trauma of combat, struggles to control his emotions. His anguish casts a shadow over the young sailors, who quietly face their own fear of death and an uncertain future.
Amid the hardships of war, the crew finds brief moments of comfort in the coffee prepared by Dr. Miyazaki (HIROYUKI EZAKI) and the homemade cookies sent by the family of Hajime Tozawa (TAKATO MURAI). Kazumichi Higashi (MASAKI NISHINA), who has left behind his young daughter and wife, speaks to his men of his hope for a future without war.
When Haguro is ambushed by the British fleet, Kazumichi Higashi orders all of the younger sailors to abandon ship. Yet, guided by the samurai belief that "When a castle falls, its lord remains with it," he chooses to remain aboard the sinking cruiser. As flames engulf the ship, Kazumichi Higashi and Dr. Miyazaki share the last of the cookies, place a letter expressing their hopes for the future inside the cookie tin, and entrust it to the sea.
Nearly eighty years later, the letter reaches Hikaru Yuzuki, carrying across time a message that invites us to remember the tragedy of war, cherish the value of human life, and renew our hope for a peaceful future.
